How it works

The longer the money stays invested, the more of the final value comes from growth on growth. Doubling the time usually does much more than doubling the result.

Returns are not smooth in real life. Use the result as a scenario, and compare a low and a high return.

Formula

Future value = amount x (1 + yearly return)^years, compounded yearly.

Common questions

Is this the same as an FD?

The maths is the same; an FD's rate is fixed and guaranteed by the bank, an investment's return is not.

Does it include tax?

No.

What if the return is negative in a year?

Use a lower average return to see the effect.
