GST calculator: add or remove GST from a price

Use this to work out the GST on a price, or to find the price before GST when you only know the bill total.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the amount.
  2. Choose the GST rate that applies to the item. Rates are set by the GST Council and change, so check the current rate for your goods or service.
  3. Say whether the amount is without GST (add GST) or with GST (take GST out).
  4. Read the price before GST, the GST, the total and the CGST and SGST split.

Worked examples

Example 1

A ₹10,000 service quoted without GST at 18%.

You enter

Amount₹10,000
GST rate18%
The amount isWithout GST (add GST)

You get

Price before GST₹10,000.00
GST (18%)₹1,800.00
Price with GST₹11,800.00
Split between CGST and SGST₹900.00 each

Example 2

A ₹11,800 bill that already includes 18% GST.

You enter

Amount₹11,800
GST rate18%
The amount isWith GST (take GST out)

You get

Price before GST₹10,000.00
GST (18%)₹1,800.00
Price with GST₹11,800.00
Split between CGST and SGST₹900.00 each

How it works

For a sale within one state, GST is split equally into CGST and SGST. For a sale between states, the whole amount is IGST instead; the total is the same.

To take GST out of a price that already includes it, divide by 1 plus the rate. Subtracting the rate percentage from the total gives a wrong answer.

Formula

GST = base price x rate. Base price = total / (1 + rate).

Common questions

Why not just subtract 18% from the bill?

Because 18% was added to the base, not to the total. The base is the total divided by 1.18.

Which rate applies to my item?

Check the official GST rate finder or ask your accountant; rates have been revised over time.

Does this file GST returns?

No, it only does the arithmetic.
